Benefits of Biking

The current recommendation is at least 30 min of physical activity daily. There are two types of exercise, anaerobic and aerobic. Anaerobic occurs in the first part of intense exercise, as it does not use oxygen in creating energy. Aerobic is longer lasting energy, think marathon vs dash. This form uses oxygen to create energy. Both are needed for a well balanced work out.

Biking mostly uses Aerobic exercise. It is a great form of cardio which increases heart and vascular health and helps lower risk of heart disease. It also helps  greatly strengthen the legs (including thighs and calves), glutes, core muscles, and benefits the deltoids, biceps, and triceps. Biking is also easier on joints than running, allowing more people to enjoy a great cardio workout. This allows families to workout together, bond, and have fun.

Here are some common biking methods. Hopefully one of them sparks some interest! Make sure to do your research before doing an activity, to ensure you conduct it safely.

-Biking to work

About 86% of people drive to work each day. Not everyone can bike to work. On flat ground it takes about 3-4 minutes to ride a mile.

-Mountain Biking

Mountain biking is a great way to get out in nature. While this can be dangerous, using proper gear like a mountain bike and helmets and taking lessons can greatly decrease risk of injury.

-Bikjoring

This is a personal favorite. Bikjoring is when a dog pulls the bike. This requires the dog to wear a proper bikjoring harness, having a running line, and to have directional commands bomb proof. Mountain bikes tend to do best with bikjoring due to their break system. Helmets and mountain biking lessons are also recommended, and also greatly decrease risk of injury. Not only is this a great form of exercise, it is also a great bonding exercise for you and your furry friend.

- Neighborhood biking

Like the other types of biking on this list, this heavily depends on your area. But a  ride around the neighborhood is convenient and lower risk for injury.

-City Biking

For some cities this is a great option to avoid the hassle of parking while still getting to explore the area. This is especially great for festivals or farmer's markets.

-Nature Trails and Parks

Parks and Nature trails tend to have pathed bike trails. Riding on these asphalt trails or even dirt trails is less risky than mountain biking, but you still get fresh air surrounded by nature. Some paths are more intense than others, so exploring and finding the right trail for you helps make working out fun.

- Stationary Bike

Sometimes biking outside is just not doable for any number of reasons. A stationary bike is helpful in this regard. You can ride it while studying, watching TV, or working from home. It doesn't have to be an intense speed, a slow and steady pedal makes a huge difference.
